As you can probably defer from the title of today’s post, we have some exciting news to share – duh!  Without any further ado let’s jump right to it!

Did we win the lotto?!? Nope, never played.

Did we double our portfolio thanks to putting everything down on Bitcoin?!?  Nope, I hope you know us better than that!  It took me months to finally put 1% into it.

Did we reach our FatFIRE figure of $1,200,000?!?  Nope! But we’re slowly marching towards it. (Future post coming out soon with our updated FIRE numbers.)

Did we adopt a puppy?!? Nope, we’re not ready to try to keep another life form alive besides humans.

Did we buy a plot of land to build a tiny house on it?!? Nope, but one can dream!

Did we sell our house and decide to be world nomads?!? Nope, but we may do something like this once we’re empty nesters.

Ok ok enough of the guessing game…

Surprise Time

Nic is pregnant with Baby #2 and babes should be making his/her debut in late June! 🙂

And no, this isn’t an April Fools joke 😉

COVID put a bit of a damper on our plans last spring to try to start conceiving then.  While most people were joking about all the “COVID babies” due to lockdowns, those of us who require fertility treatments were in limbo waiting for the fertility clinics to open back up.  Thankfully there wasn’t too much of a delay.  Finn worked with IUI on the first try (super rare!) and baby 2 worked on IUI attempt 3.  We honestly were expecting to try IUI at least 6 times for each kid and then when that didn’t work, take a break, and decide if we wanted to keep trying with IUI or shift over to the more expensive IVF route.

We spent $3,177 while conceiving Finn between three vials of donor sperm (bulk of the cost of which we used 1 and saved 2 for hopeful baby 2), the IUI attempt at the fertility clinic, ovulation kits, pregnancy tests, and different medicines and vitamins.  We spent $5,286 while conceiving baby 2 between 3 more vials of donor sperm (again, the bulk of the cost – the 2 vials we saved after Finn didn’t work so we then ordered 3 more, of which we ended up with two extras which we will be donating to science), 3 IUI attempts, donor sperm storage for a few years, medicines, vitamins, ovulation kits, and pregnancy tests.

We decided to wait on the gender with Finn, which was very hard for the OCD planner that I am, but it truly was an amazing experience to be surprised like that.  We like to think of it as the only thing in life that you can’t Google these days.  We were honestly more shocked with her red hair when she came out (which is now blonde) then her gender (even though EVERYONE guessed we were having a boy)!  We decided to do the same with baby 2 so we will find out the gender once he/she is born.  Deciding on a name is by far the hardest part for me and having to come up with two names not knowing the gender is grueling!  We are still teetering on both the boy and girl names for babes 2 and we’re only a few months away!

What Does This Mean For The Blog?

I will be taking off of here for a bit to help keep two little humans alive.  I will start shifting to bi-weekly post vs my typical weekly posts here shortly and then once baby 2 does make its arrival I will be taking a break from the blog completely for a few months.  My goal is to be posting again in October but that likely is a pipe dream.  Maybe I get a random post out if it’s somehow quiet in my neck of the woods and I’m not 10000% drained.  Whenever I do resume, I plan to cut back to bi-weekly posts going forward.  Hope you all understand that our WHY to all of this is to be able to spend time together as a family and doubling responsibilities with two tiny tots means less time to focus my eyes on screens.

We do have quite a few FIRE Community Guest Interview Series in the backlog so I will continue to post those monthly as long as we have entries for that (currently lined up through December – thank you to all who have sent those over!).  I’ll try to continue to post our quarterly net worth updates (modified/shortened version) as well as the travel hacking posts so maybe you will see our name pop up in your inbox, who knows.

As long time readers know, I write these posts while at work, not at home.  As of now, I have decided to take the full 18 months of parental leave off (thank youuuu Canada!).  Well technically it’s 61 weeks max per parent of “extended benefits” with the birth parent able to also take an additional 15 weeks.  Since I am not the birth parent, 61 weeks is the max for me so that’s what I would take.  This would take us roughly from July 1, 2021 to September 1, 2022 on parental leave.  We would then assess our thoughts and our portfolio at that time.  Maybe I’ll be done for good or maybe I’ll go back to my part-time gig for a few months until March 2023 to add a little more padding to the portfolio (assuming a small bonus in March for the later months back in the office from 2022).  Maybe I’ll go back for a year or two, who knows.  This is all WAY too far out to know what we will decide on but these are our thoughts for now.

As much as I’d love to be off and we spend all summer at the cabin, I know that’s highly unlikely with a newborn with all the upcoming doctor visits and immunizations during the first few months.  We will head out to the cabin as much as possible though.  Maybe do a road trip out west a year from now in the Spring of 2022 and spend a month or two in Vancouver Island.  And then next summer baby 2 will be a year old and we plan to spend most, if not all, of our time from late-April/early-May through September at the cabin in 2022.  And then of course visits from various family members sprinkled in between (assuming COVID restrictions allow such visits).  Hopefully cross border travel opens back up so my family can come up and spend some time up here during both summers.

That’s it for now!  Did you guess the right surprise when you saw today’s post?  Or did you think it was something different?  Any baby name suggestions for us to add to our ever changing list?  For those with kids, did anyone else decide to wait to find out the gender until birth?  Did you any of you non-birth parents decide to take parental leave off?

We also wanted to congratulate our two winners of The Grumpy Accountant book giveaway we held this month!  David R and Chris I, congrats on winning this awesome giveaway!  I will be sending you both emails as well.  Cheers!  For those who did not win, please check to see if this book is available at your library, it’s definitely worth the read!

    1. Thanks J! Hahahah will keep that name in mind 🙂 Middle name will start with a J as we have a lot of J’s in our family we’d like to honour 🙂

  1. Oh Wow!! Congrats Court and Nic, what a wonderful surprise! If it’s a girl, I love the name Heidi :).

    1. Thank you Danielle! Oo Nic has a cousin named Heidi so unfortunately it’s out for us. Isn’t it weird/funny how certain names get crossed off just because you know someone else with the same name?

    1. Thank you Chris, yes sure is! We keep saying “are we sure we’re ready to wreck havoc on our little home unit again”!?

    1. Thank you Chrissy! Finn is in pretend big sister mode like crazy! My fav is when she pretends to be preggo with one of her stuffies stuffed under her shirt and tells me the baby will be ready to come out in a few weeks. Then it’s time and she lays on her bed and takes deep breaths and “pushes” the baby out 🤣

  2. Yay! Congratulations to your wonderful family!

We also saved reveal for once baby was born. Made it so much easier to talk about other things than sex and gender, and there’s so much more to talk about!

    1. Thank you Anthony and good to hear from you! Yes, great point in regards to talking about something other than the gender!

  3. Congratulations on baby #2! That’s so exciting! I recently discovered FI and your blog and it has been such a fantastic resource! We’re a 2-mom family with 2 kids who were traveling and worldschooling our kids full-time before the pandemic, but decided to return to Canada last year due to Covid. We’re currently based on Vancouver Island and will be here through at least summer 2022. We live out of long-term furnished rentals, so feel free to reach out if you need any help finding accommodation next year if you come for a stay here and / or it would be great to meet up!

    1. Hey Erin! Thanks for this note and so glad you found us! Yay another 2 mom/2 kid FI focused fam in Canada, amazing!

Whoa, yes will definitely be contacting you if/when we head out west in early 2022 – would love to meet up! (That’s what this blog is all about for me, making connections with like minded folks.) Would love to hear more about world schooling as I’m super intrigued by it but also equally as intimidated by it ha. What part of VanIsle are you in? We’re thinking of staying in the Ladysmith area for the majority and a week or so further north in the Comox/Courtenay area.

  4. Mary almost on FIRE

Wow! Great news! Congrats! My first baby i wanted to wait till the end for the gender, but at week 36 check up it was kind of obvious and my partner really wanted to know so thats when we learned it. Second baby was 5 years later and i did ask about the gender early cuz i wanted to be able to declutter all those girl clothes boxes we had been keeping in case asap 😆

      1. Thank you Gean! It still hasn’t hit me yet that I’m about to be off for a year. I say off loosely though so I know trying to keep two kiddos alive 24/7 will be harder than my current part time job!

    1. Thank you Mary! Having the itch to Declutter is real! I totally get that! That was Nic’s argument for wanting to find out the gender this time but I stayed strong and insisted we waited after she put me through the ringer waiting on the gender for baby 1 lol!

  5. Congratulations!!! I’ve already been tricked by a few articles today so I really thought this was going to be an April Fool’s post. But as soon as I read that Nic is pregnant I realised it wasn’t. So happy for you all! And as always, I really appreciate how open you are with sharing your true cost of things – hearing the cost of IUI can be really eye opening and/or helpful for people depending on their own circumstances. Best wishes to you all as you welcome this new human in a few months!

    1. Thank you Cass! Yea I realized when I read a few April Fools posts earlier in the day that the timing of scheduling this reveal wasn’t ideal hah, oh well!

And yea for sure, we’re all about being transparent and trying to show the true cost of things. 🙂 We got SUPER lucky with IUI working as quickly as it did for both pregnancies. We were definitely expecting it to take longer and cost more.

  6. Congratulations! Such exciting news! Hope the final trimester is going well and let’s hope those borders open up soon, so your family can come visit.

    1. Thank you!! Nic was having some major hip pain for about a month and went to see a prenatal chiro and poof she magically healed the pain in one session, so that was awesome! And yes, here’s hoping to open borders in the near future! My moms been itching to come up for a visit!

  7. How exciting! We wanted the gender to be a surprise for both of ours and it was probably the most exciting part. We ended up with two girls. When I had my first the extended leave wasn’t an option, but my husband ended up taking 2 months at the end. I’m currently on extended mat leave. My husband took the paid 8 weeks when the baby was born and will take another month or two this summer unpaid. We’re so lucky to have great parental leave options in Canada!

    1. Thank you Heather! Yea, not knowing the gender definitely keeps the pregnancy exciting! Although Finn insists she’s having a sister and is going to be “crushed” if it’s a boy lol. Ah so glad you guys were able to go the extended leave route this go around and that your husband is able to take some time off as well. Congrats on your two little ones as well! And yes, the social systems here really are top notch! 🙂

  8. A big huge congratulations!! I definitely suspected a baby announcement when I saw the post title! Yay! Good for you taking the full parental leave. I am on track for 13.5 months leave but I am really considering doing the full 18. My husband is starting his parental leave next week for 6+ months. Can’t wait to spend the summer and possibly into the winter as a little family. Very excited for your family! Congratulations!

    1. Thank you Mrs. B! I’ve only ever “known” you as TheFireJourney so now I’m peeling through the layers of your identity 🙂

If you do the full 18 and your husband takes 6+ months will some of that be unpaid I presume? Or how does that all work out? So awesome you guys are able to get that much time off combined!

As a young parent myself and knowing a bit of your story, I’d say go for as much time off during the little ones life as possible 🙂 You’re wellllllll on your way to FI and can coast a bit for now. Just my two cents, but I know that’s hard to hear when you’re a go-getter type personality (as I am too) and likely want to see your FI goal ASAP.

    1. Thank you David! Ha! I didn’t even recognize that I hadn’t changed the URL when I changed the title awhile ago. Whoops! And good for you for spotting that 🙂

  9. Congratulations this is great news. I have been thinking about all of you as I know you were going through this journey.

We also didn’t find out if our little one was a boy or a girl until she was born. It’s such a nice surprise and definitely worth the wait.

So excited for your growing family.

    1. Thank you Maria! It’s been a bit of a whirlwind with Covid but all good!

Very cool to hear you guys waited on the gender too! Agreed, it’s definitely worth the wait 🙂
