Hey FImily!

During the month of May we are going to be implementing a group social media detox for anyone who is interested.

What Do We Mean By A Group Social Media Detox?

Well, pretty much just what it sounds like.  We are collecting email addresses of others who are interested in participating as a team to say NO to all forms of social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) for a 31 day period from May 1-31.  The rest of your phone is allowable (email, internet, non social media apps, etc.).  I know the world is a scary and unpredictable place these days so we are not encouraging you to be totally MIA from everything going on with COVID-19, which is why this is solely focused on social media platforms only and not the entire internet (although we do encourage you to take advice from Cal Newport who suggests checking ONE international news outlet of your choice and ONE local news outlet of your choice a day and then moving on).  Taking a break from social media at this point may be exactly what you need.  Especially if you find yourself at home more and mindlessly scrolling on social media to kill time.

What Does It Entail?

We will be sending out emails to those who sign up for the challenge starting in April to help prepare for the self-ban.  We will also be sending out emails throughout the month of May to get feedback from the group to see how everyone is doing.  We’re honestly quite curious to see what percentage of people are able to go for the FULL month without their social media crutches – especially with everything that is going on in the world and the markets these days.

What Will I Get Out Of It?

We’ve read two books now specifically geared towards reducing the amount of time you spend on your phone and the statistics within the pages of these books are honestly mind boggling. We know that there are MANY other people out there that would love to reduce/remove social media from their lives but just can’t get themselves to do it.  Consider this your holy grail welcome package to the world of helping you cure your social media addiction.

And let’s face it, it is an addiction.  Most people think you can only be addicted to drugs, alcohol, food, or gambling.  And most people tend to look down on these people.  But we’re all addicted to our smart phones.  Don’t believe me?

  • When was the last time you spent more than 5 hours away from your phone in a row (not counting when you sleep – although many people do sleep with their phones in their bed or on their bedside table right next to them)?
  • When was the last time you didn’t check your phone within the first 60 minutes of being awake?
  • When was the last time you used the washroom without your phone in your hand or pocket?
  • When was the last time you had a half-assed conversation with someone because you were trying to multitask and half listen to them while also scrolling or typing on your phone?

See what  mean….? Feeling a little guilty?  Don’t feel guilty – you are simply a clog in the phone developers world and you are doing EXACTLY what they want you to do (no offense to any phone developers out there).

But let’s break free.  Let’s show our strength.  Let’s overcome our addiction.  Together.

We did this challenge ourselves back in January, and it was honestly a difficult yet amazing experience. The first week was by far the hardest/strangest.  Once you get through that weird feeling during the first week, you’re golden.  We found that we connected with our “core” group of friends and family more this month in a long time and that’s honestly what made the entire experience worthwhile.  You’re not isolating yourself.  You’re building up on the relationships that really matter.

Since completing this challenge a few months ago, I have decided to limit myself to 30 minutes a day to my social media platforms.  My presence deserves to be elsewhere – namely in the moment with those right in front of me.  By taking part in this challenge, I really understood how many USELESS hours were spent staring at my phone.  I was much more productive in January and have the ban to thank for that.

Game On

If you’re interested in joining, please send us an email at modernfimily@gmail.com simply with your email address and telling us you’re interested in joining the the rest of the crew who have already signed up for the month long social media detox.  That’s it. Your email address will NOT be shared with anyone else and all group emails we send out will be through bcc so no one will see the list of participants.

Our hope is to create a team atmosphere by asking questions each week, collecting the responses, and sharing them anonymously (if you prefer) to the rest of the group.  We’re hoping that having multiple people take part in the challenge at the same time provides motivation and fuel to want to succeed with your peers. Maybe you view it as a competition then to see if you can make it to the bitter end when others may not be able to do so?  Whatever motivation you need, we’re hoping to provide it.

Once the group challenge has been completed, we will publish a post about it on our blog that will be filled with the most useful comments we receive by those partaking in the challenge.

Similar to our January detox, we will still be active via our blog and will be posting regularly and responding to comments on here.

Again, if you’re interested, please send us an email at modernfimily@gmail.com to be added to the list.  Hope to see you there addicts – I’m looking at YOU!

DO you think you are due for a detox?  What’s holding you back?  This is the perfect opportunity to flex your muscles and prove to yourself you do not need social media. Come join the party 🙂
